1) Settlement of Slavic people (7th century)
Many nomadic tribes lived in Russia before Slavs, but it was Slavs who first settled and formed community in Russia. We can say that the history of Russia starts from here. They gradually moved in to Russia and formed their unique society. They are ancestors of current Russians.

2)Establishment of Kievan Rus (A.D 882)
Kievan Rus is first empire that was established in Russia. It was established by number of Slavic people in Russia. It is key historical event in Russian History, because this is first Russian kingdom that was established in history. With establishment of Kievan Rus, Russia began interacting with other countries by diplomacy and trade. Also, many other non-slavic tribes gathered together and formed state during this period.

3) Invasion of Mongolians (1223)
Mongolians invaded Russia in 11th century and colonized Russia. This is the only time when Russia was colonized by other country. During this period, many non-Slavic people immigrated to Russia, which made Russia to become multi-cultural society. Many different states were formed by different tribes. This event triggered formation of multi-ethnic society in Russia. This multi-ethnic and multi-cultural social structure still exists in modern Russia.

4) Rise of Moscow (Gaining independence from Mongolians) - 1380
During 14th century, Moscow expelled Mongolians from Russia and gained independence.This event is considerably important, because it gave opportunity to Russia to recover from the domination of Mongolians. Since the independence, Ivan the Great started gaining territories. Moscow Empire flourished until 17th century until Michael Romanov I took over the throne and established Romanov Dynasty.

5) Rise of Romanov Dynasty (1613)
During 17th century, Miachael Romanov took over the throne and established Romanov Dynasty. During this period, Russia became powerful nation in country. Especially Peter the Great brought rapid change in Russian Empire. Because of his efforts, Russia became modernized, began active trade with other countries and acquired considerable military power.

6) Napoleon's Invasion (1812)
Napoleon and his empire gained considerable power and conquered various European countries. Then, in 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia to gain further territories. Russian empire used defensive tactics to face Napoleon's powerful army. Eventually, Russian empire defeated Napoleon's Army and he retreated from Russia. This event caused fall of Napoleon and made Russia to become one of the most powerful country in Europe during post-Napoleonic period.

7) Russian Revolution (1917) and Formation of Soviet Union (1922)
During 20th century, Vladimir Lenin formed Red Army and led Russian revolution. This revolution succeeded and Russia established Soviet Union. (USSR)This revolution is key event in Russian history, because long period of imperial Russia ended and era of Soviet Union began. Moreover, Russia started to have communist ideology after this revolution.
USSR became one of the most powerful communist country in the world and many Eastern European countries became parts of USSR during this period. USSR soon became one of the most powerful nation.

8) Cold War (1960's ~1980's)
During, 1960's to 1980's, is known as Cold war era. During this period USSR and United States competed each other to gain world power. They did not have war directly, but there was huge political, economic and diplomatic tension between these countries. Many countries were affected by this cold war, because both USSR and US intervene to political situation in order to make these countries to follow their political ideologies. Eventually, USSR lost the cold war due to collapse of economy, and this was a main cause of break of USSR.

9) Disintegration of Soviet Union (1991)
Due to economic depression and political chaos, USSR was unable have centralized power anymore. Thus many countries that were under USSR fought for independence. Then, eventually USSR collapsed in 1991. This is key event in history, because Russia lost world power and many countries got independence from USSR. Also, Post-Soviet Union era began from this event.

10) Rise of Russia Federation(1990~Now)
In 1990, USSR declared to become Russian Federation. Since then, Russia experienced radical economic and political change to become democratic country and have market economy. There were many conflicts and problems accompanied with this change. But,especially the efforts of president Vladimir Putin, Russia became stabilized. This is a key historical event, because Russia went through complete transition after fall of USSR, and became democratic country successfully.
